Hathaway Serenades Indie “Song One”

With blockbusters “The Dark Knight Rises” and “Les Miserables” all but behind her, Anne Hathawayis calling on connections from across her career for a dive back into romantic drama, eyeing a reunion with “Rachel Getting Married” producers Marc Platt and Jonathan Demme to topline and produce indie “Song One.”

Kate Barker-Froyland — who served as “The Devil Wears Prada” director David Frankel’s assistant during its production — wrote the original script and would make her feature directorial debut. And in a final stroke of six-degrees, Hathaway’s fiancee, Adam Shulman, is also producing.

Story centers on a young woman who returns home after her brother is injured, only to meet and romantically connect with his favorite musician, who draws inspiration from the siblings.

Several elements must fall into place for the project to materialize, and while Hathaway is not officially committed to star, her schedule for the year looks open for an actress of her stature: none of the development projects to which she’s attached have firm start dates.

CAA and Management 360-repped thesp has been fond of romantic dramas in past years, having recently starred in “Love and Other Drugs” and “One Day,” both of which were adapted from popular novels. Whole-cloth project “Song One” may be just what Hathaway is looking for coming off two commercial films.

Barker-Froyland, who has a trio of short films under her belt, is repped by ICM Partners.
