‘Locked Down’ Trailer: Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejiofor Team Up for Quarantine Heist

The HBO Max thriller rom-com was directed by Doug Liman and was filmed and set during the coronavirus pandemic.

HBO Max has debuted the trailer for the Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejiofor quarantine heist film Locked Down, directed by Doug Liman.

Set in the time of the coronavirus pandemic, the trailer opens to an all-too familiar scene — a Zoom call discussing the ongoing matters of global lockdown.

“We are all locked in this psychological prison of burning aloneness,” Ejiofor’s Paxton tells his fellow Zoom callers.

Meanwhile, left with nowhere to escape, Anne Hathaway’s Linda screams in frustration, alone, in the safety of her own garden — a sentiment likely shared by many at some point over the course of quarantine.

The film, which was filmed in London amid the pandemic before being acquired by HBO Max in December, follows Hathaway and Ejiofor’s sparring couple as they attempt a high-risk, high-stakes jewelry heist at the world’s most exclusive department store, Harrods.

Before planning the robbery, the two struggle to coexist together as Paxton is furloughed from work.

“Now, there is literally zero purpose to my life,” he expresses, followed by shots of the couple performing the mundane routines of staying inside.

Paxton even takes a visit to the grocery store, where he encounters a man buying an excessive amount of toilet paper.

“It’s not about the virus, it’s about who I am and what I do for a living,” Linda pleads with Paxton, as she is forced to confront the harsh realities of laying people off during a pandemic.

Cue more frustrated groans and copious amounts of wine for Linda.

But when the couple’s work lives coincide, Linda and Paxton call a truce, as they team up to steal a diamond worth 300 million pounds from Harrods.

The trailer closes on the couple in an elevator mid-heist, joined by an unknowing department store worker.

“Who’d have thought a month ago, we’d be doing this?” the woman asks, referring to the pandemic.

“Not me,” Linda smirks.

The trailer is reminiscent of director Liman’s previous works such as Mr. and Mrs. Smith and The Bourne Identity. The script was penned by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.

HBO Max acquired worldwide rights for the film in December. Stephen Merchant, Mindy Kaling, Lucy Boynton, Dulé Hill, Jazmyn Simon, Ben Stiller and Ben Kingsley also star.

Locked Down is set to begin streaming on HBO Max on Jan. 14.

Robert Zemeckis’ ‘The Witches’ Moves to HBO Max

Roald Dahl’s The Witches, Warner Bros. Pictures’ adaptation of the supernatural children’s novel directed by Robert Zemeckis, is heading to HBO Max.

The movie, which stars Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer and Chris Rock, will debut exclusively on the WarnerMedia streaming service Oct. 22. The film will head into theatres internationally beginning October 28.

The family fantasy was originally due to open theatrically Oct. 9, 2020 but was taken off the release calendar by the studio in June due to the ongoing pandemic and shutdowns of theatres.

The studio and streamer will now put their might behind the movie with an extensive marketing campaign.

The movie is described as a reimagining of Dahl’s story for modern audiences and, according to the studio, is a “darkly humorous and heartwarming tale of a young orphaned boy who, in late 1967, goes to live with his loving Grandma in the rural Alabama town of Demopolis.? As the boy and his grandmother encounter some deceptively glamorous but thoroughly diabolical witches, she wisely whisks our young hero away to an opulent seaside resort.? Regrettably, they arrive at precisely the same time that the world’s Grand High Witch has gathered her fellow cronies from around the globe—undercover—to carry out her nefarious plans.”

The novel, published in 1983, was set in England. It was previously adapted in 1990 in a feature that starred Anjelica Houston and Rowan Atkinson.

In addition to Hathaway, Spencer and Rock, the cast inlcudes Stanley Tucci, Kristin Chenoweth and newcomer Jahzir Kadeem Bruno (TV’s Atlanta) and Codie-Lei Eastick (Holmes & Watson).
