Anne Hathaway in Bride Wars and Rachel’s Getting Married

ANNE Hathaway may look like butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth but, like her Bride Wars character, the Golden Globe nominee’s sweetness hides a stern core.

If you believe Anne Hathaway, she’s not glamorous, not a role model and potentially not employable.

The 26-year-old — whose classic style, porcelain skin, dark doe eyes and Julia Roberts-like smile have made her a favourite on the red carpet — may be one of the movie industry’s most in-demand young actors . . . but don’t go telling her that.

‘‘I am facing unemployment squarely in the face,” she says, in a sing-song saccharine voice. Continue reading

Anne Hathaway interview: Virtue in vice

DO I know any addicts, Anne Hathaway wants to know. Oh, good grief. It’s not the question that’s disconcerting; it’s the person framing it. With her tidy image and innocent smile, 26-year-old Hathaway is best known for flying the girl-next-door flag in The Devil Wears Prada or playing fairy-tale princesses in Ella Enchanted and The Princess Diaries.

Her question comes in the wake of one of her latest roles, a rehab patient on a weekend pass to her sister’s wedding in Rachel Getting Married. And she is surprised by my reaction. “I know this seems enormously short-sighted, but to be perfectly frank, I had no idea how strongly I was connected to the image of a good girl,” says Hathaway, flashing that smile. “When I took the role, I just thought, ‘This is a great opportunity for me as an actress.’ I didn’t think, ‘Wow, what a great chance to shake up people’s perception of me.'” Continue reading

Anne Hathaway Is Talking Weddings

Anne Hathaway swears she she’s not one of those gals who obsesses about her dream wedding. But she does admit to thinking about at least one detail of the big day.

“I haven’t thought about the food; I haven’t thought about the look; I haven’t thought about my dress. I haven’t really thought about the guy,” Hathaway says in the new issue of Modern Bride magazine. “But every once in a while, I’ll listen to a song, and I’m like, ‘I want that at my wedding.’ ”

What’s on her playlist?

“Maps” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs and “Walken” by Wilco are a couple of her faves. And she has high hopes for “You Are the Best Thing” by Ray LaMontagne. “That’s going to be, like the number one wedding song for the next 25 years,” predicts Hathaway, who stars in next month’s Bride Wars opposite Kate Hudson. “Trust me.” Continue reading

Review: Hathaway propels Demme’s ‘Rachel’

RACHEL GETTING MARRIED, directed by Jonathan Demme, written by Jenny Lumet, 113 minutes, rated R.

Jonathan Demme’s “Rachel Getting Married” isn’t really about Rachel (Rosemarie DeWitt) at all. It’s about her screwed-up sister Kym (Anne Hathaway in her best performance to date), a smoky, troublemaking but ultimately well-meaning mess on leave from a rehab facility who has been on drugs and booze for so much of her life, she unfortunately claimed another life along the way.

Just who that is won’t be revealed here, but it drives the emotions in a movie happy to unleash them at any point, which is often. Continue reading
