Anne Hathaway sizzles in Demme’s dreary ‘Rachel Getting Married’

Ever been to one of those weddings that just will not end?

“Rachel Getting Married” is the cinematic equivalent, a movie with a powerful performance from Anne Hathaway but a story undone by the self-indulgence of director Jonathan Demme, who loiters interminably on some scenes.

Demme’s detours into documentaries (“Neil Young: Heart of Gold,” “Jimmy Carter: Man From Plains”) actually serve him well as he crafts a loose, docudrama style that infuses great authenticity into this anguished reunion tale of family and friends.

But Demme did the reflect-real-life thing almost too well. Many moments are genuine to the point where you feel trapped in a room with someone else’s relations in a marathon session of picking and clawing at old wounds. Continue reading

Anne Hathaway To Break New, Cross-Dressing Ground Onstage

Happily, Bride Wars wasn’t the ’09 setback we feared for Anne Hathaway, but rather a minor detour on her way to the coveted, gender-bending Shakespearean promised land.

New York’s Public Theatre announced today that Hathaway would appear in this summer’s Shakespeare in the Park production of Twelfth Night — its sixth mounting of the comedy, but no doubt the first featuring the Oscar-nominated ex of a faux-Vatican CFO. As a man. Sort of: Hathaway will play the female lead Viola, shipwrecked with her identical twin Sebastian in the mythical dukedom of Illyria. Mistaken identity, servitude and cross-dressing ensue, and Viola falls in love with the Duke. Whose role hasn’t yet been cast, we hear, though let’s be honest: If ever there were a time for Hathaway and Frank Langella to settle their filthy unfinished business, this would be it.

Anne Hathaway Cast in Stephen Chow’s Superhero Comedy?

China.org.cn is reporting that Anne Hathaway is likely to star in Stephen Chow’s next movie. When Chow bowed out of directing The Green Hornet, he said that he would like to free some time up to work with Jack Black on a different superhero comedy? Well this is it.

Wei Dasen, a representative of Chow’s production company describes the film as “a superhero, action-packed, special effects-rich, and of course funny” . Sources close to Chow supposedly are saying that the film will be similar in style to the over-the-top parody of “Kung Fu Hustle”. Chow is writing the screenplay and will also co-star. No further details are available at this time.

Hathaway sizzles in dreary ‘Rachel’

Ever been to one of those weddings that just will not end? “Rachel Getting Married” is the cinematic equivalent, a movie with a powerful performance from Anne Hathaway but a story undone by the self-indulgence of director Jonathan Demme, who loiters interminably on some scenes.

Anne Hathaway, left, is Kym and Rosemarie DeWitt as Rachel in “Rachel Getting Married.”

Demme’s detours into documentaries (“Neil Young: Heart of Gold,” “Jimmy Carter: Man from Plains”) actually serve him well as he crafts a loose, docudrama style that infuses great authenticity into this anguished reunion tale of family and friends.
