ANNE HATHAWAY

AGE 25

BROKE OUT IN… The Princess Diaries, as klutzy-turned-polished royal Mia Thermopolis.

WHY HER Hathaway, who takes on edgy dramas (Brokeback Mountain) and bubbly comedies (The Devil Wears Prada) with equal verve, has a down-to-earth, every girl appeal (read: she’s not often caught clubbing) that has already drawn comparisons to the likes of a few established leading ladies (ahem, Julia Roberts).

WHAT’S NEXT She’s teaming up with Steve Carell for the secret agent satire Get Smart (June 20) and then switching genres with the horror flick Passengers (Sept. 5). Future projects include the dark comedy Dancing With Shiva and the wedding romp Bride Wars, alongside Kate Hudson.

Anne Hathaway and Steve Carell team up for Get Smart

The all-new action comedy Get Smart stars Steve Carell as Maxwell Smart, who is on a mission to thwart the latest plot for world domination by the evil crime syndicate known as KAOS.When the headquarters of U.S spy agency Control is attacked and the identities of its agents compromised, the Chief (Alan Arkin) has no choice but to promote his ever eager analyst Maxwell Smart, who has always dreamt of working in the field alongside stalwart superstar Agent 23 (Dwayne “The Rock” been compromised: the lovely-but-lethal veteran Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway).

As Smart and 99 get closer to unraveling KAOS mater plan and each other they discover that key KAOD operative Siegfried (Terence Stamp) and his sidekick Starker (Kenneth Davitian) are scheming to cash in with their network of terror. Given little field experience and even less time, Smart armed with nothing but few spy-tech gadgets and his unbridled enthusiasm must defeat KAOS if he is to save the day.

The film has been directed by Peter Segal and is due to hit theatres on June 20.

Hathaway gets ShoWest crown

Anne Hathaway, who will star in Warner Bros.’ summer comedy “Get Smart,” will be honored as female star of the year at ShoWest 2008.

Hathaway, who launched her film career with 2001’s “The Princess Diaries,” will be feted March 13 at an awards gala set to close ShoWest. The exhibition confab opens March 10 at the Bally’s and Paris hotels in Las Vegas.

“Since making her big-screen debut, (Hathaway) has gone on to engage audiences of all ages with a broad range of roles, which is quite a testament to this extremely talented young actress,” ShoWest co-managing director Mitch Neuhauser said. “From her roles as a naive young assistant in ‘The Devil Wears Prada,’ a feisty cowgirl in ‘Brokeback Mountain,’ a Jane Austen heroine in ‘Becoming Jane’ and a reluctant princess in ‘The Princess Diaries’ and ‘The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement,’ Hathaway has proven to audiences that she can carry any role that comes her way.”

Hathaway stars opposite Steve Carell in “Get Smart,” set to open June 20.

She also recently completed production on the drama “Passengers,” co-starring Patrick Wilson and directed by Rodrigo Garcia, and the Jonathan Demme comedy “Dancing With Shiva,” co-starring Debra Winger.

Hathaway next begins work on the romantic comedy “Bride Wars.”

ShoWest is produced by the Nielsen Film Group, a unit of Nielsen Business Media, parent company of The Hollywood Reporter.
